the race

“The creek bed is extremely special. It’s not quaint and picturesque. Instead, it’s wild and primordial. It’s an ancient sea bed that holds black corals and fossils from Paleolithic times. The gnarly exposed Cypress roots give a timeless feeling and a sculptural quality.

“This property’s unique geologic presence defies the typical Hill Country-quaint aesthetic.

I want to amplify that.

“When we arrive at our new home, I want a Wow. I want people to be surprised to see such an interesting, elegant, and inviting structure in the countryside. I want people to feel a sense of surprise while still nodding yes - that building belongs there.

“Nothing stately, definitely not something rustic. Natural, graceful, beautiful, and refined would be the feelings I’d like to evoke.

“I absolutely adore Art Nouveau and how relevant the organic designs are in this environment and I do want to express Nouveau sensibilities.

The Race suggests that the answers are already there, and that the design problem is how to slow down enough to uncover them.

Inspired by the homeowner’s deep passion for the natural qualities of their dream creekside property, we worked together to find ways to amplify them. The end result should, in essence, feel like walking along Cypress Creek.

The 200+ year-old cypress trunks present themselves as showcases of rigorous grace. The first thing to notice upon arrival to the new home will be the oversized, hug-ready columns. These columns support a complex latticework of steel filaments, mimicking the cypress needles of the site trees. These elements gave our entry walkway its’ name - “The Needlewalk”.

The Needlewalk carries you alongside the proudly linear home, past the “Primordial Court” and linear water feature, to the house’s entry.

This entry reveals itself only once you are deep into the site, at the epicenter of the two colliding worlds - an airy public space to the left, and cave-like private zones to the right.

A nearby swimming hole inspired the public side of The Race. This hole is known as a very small geological swimming area surrounded by gathering coves and natural terraces. Similarly, the public side of The Race will contain kitchen-living-dining spaces, each with nooks and spaces to escape to, all set within a thick column + glass space.

Conquistadors, who left behind prints and tales of the area, inspired the private side of The Race. This centers around the “Gold Room”, the master bedroom suite with many surprise elements hidden in plain sight - a flowing tiled ceiling, disappearing sliding panel doors, a 92’ interior view through the entire length of the house.

The land, travel, and romance drive the design of The Race, which we believe were there the whole time.
